The United States is providing the United Nations with $1.8 billion in humanitarian aid, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said Thursday, adding that the money will help reach “millions of people with life-saving support.”
The funds will help deliver aid to people affected by the world’s worst humanitarian crisis, Guterres said.
In December, the US already gave two billion dollars to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).
Before President Donald Trump took office, US financial contributions to OCHA were at times much higher.
The US also still owes the financially strapped UN billions in dues, about $2 billion in the regular budget and about $2.2 billion in the budget for peacekeeping missions.
Trump has repeatedly criticized the United Nations. During his tenure, the US withdrew from numerous UN agencies and UN-sponsored agreements.
