For the fifth time this year, the United States Senate has rejected a proposal that would limit the president’s war powers and require congressional approval for any future military action in Iran.
The proposal failed with 46 votes in favor and 51 against. Democratic Sen. John Fetterman voted with Republicans against the measure, while Republican Sen. Rand Paul supported the Democratic proposal.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has announced that his party will push for a vote on war powers every week going forward.
Some Republican senators, including Thom Tillis and Lisa Murkowski, are open to supporting a vote to authorize military force if the conflict goes beyond 60 days.
However, Senate Republican Majority Leader John Thune said he does not see the possibility of such a vote for now.
