US President Donald Trump has signed a law lifting sanctions from 2019, known as Caesar’s Law, US media reported.
Earlier this year, Washington began to gradually lift sanctions against Syria, after the ouster of al-Assad in December last year.
Addressing the nation from Mount Qasioun, which rises above Damascus, al-Sharaa marked “the first day of life in Syria without sanctions” and thanked Trump and the US Congress for recognizing the suffering of the Syrian people.
– Today is your day, great Syrian people. The age of pain is over, and the age of renewal has begun. Together, hand in hand, we will rebuild this country – said al-Sharaa.
The Syrian president, a former Islamist rebel commander who led the rebel alliance that toppled al-Assad, paid tribute to all those who suffered during the nearly 14-year civil war, including the dead, displaced and missing.
Al-Shaaraa also thanked Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Qatari Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, as well as Arab and European countries, which he said supported Syria and contributed to the easing of sanctions during the past year, DW reports.
