The Swiss football team, which will be one of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s opponents in the group stage of the upcoming World Cup, suffered a huge blow earlier.
Experienced goalkeeper and long-time member of the Swiss team, Yann Sommer, has made the decision to end his international career, which means that we will not see him at the upcoming World Cup.
After an impressive career during which he made 94 appearances for the national team, Sommer decided it was time for the younger ones. The experienced goalkeeper broke after the end of the European Championship, feeling that it was the ideal time to retire, before the new Nations League cycle begins.
“It was the perfect time to say goodbye”
In an interview with the Italian media, Sommer spoke openly about the motives that led him to take this radical step, stressing that he made the decision in peace and that the family played a key role in everything.
“For me, it was the perfect moment to say goodbye. The tournament was over, and before the Nations League… It was just the perfect moment to break and say, ‘It’s OK, that’s enough,’” Sommer said.
However, behind the scenes of this sporting decision, there is also an emotional, family segment. Sommer admitted that the moments of separation from his family became increasingly difficult, and in particular he singled out one very emotional and difficult moment with his daughter during the last Euro, which further accelerated his decision to hang up his representative gloves and fully devote himself to his club career and his loved ones.
For years, Sommer was considered a solid bulwark and leader of the dressing room, a man who brought calmness to the Swiss in key matches at major competitions.
Given that Bosnia and Herzegovina and Switzerland are placed in the same group at the upcoming World Cup (along with Canada and Qatar), the absence of a goalkeeper of this caliber is undoubtedly a mitigating circumstance for the “Dragon” attackers.
