Most of the more than 3,500 people who were evacuated in Italy’s Tuscany after a large fire broke out there managed to spend the night in their homes after the situation calmed down, authorities said on Saturday.
The fire services are making good progress in fighting the fire on Monte Faeta, a mountain 830 meters high, located between Pisa and Lucca. The report states that about seven square kilometers of forest were destroyed.
Firefighting planes and helicopters were deployed over the area along with dozens of firefighters.
The municipality of San Giuliano Terme, where several hundred people had to spend the night outside, was the hardest hit.
It is believed that the fire was accidentally caused by a farmer who was burning olive branches.
Tuscany with its capital Florence belongs to one of the most popular tourist regions of Italy.
