The richest Ukrainian bought an apartment in Monaco for 471 million euros

Billionaire Rinat Akhmetov, the richest Ukrainian, bought a luxurious five-story apartment in one of the most prestigious new buildings in Monaco for 471 million euros, making it one of the largest single real estate sales in history, writes Bloomberg.

It is an apartment with 21 rooms right on the seashore, which was bought by the holding company of that entrepreneur.

The property is located in Maretera, a part of the city built on reclaimed land, which was opened in 2024 by Prince Albert II, and which attracted ultra-rich investors from all over the world.

The apartment is located in the main building of the “Le Renzo” project and covers about 2,500 square meters. It includes a private pool, jacuzzi and at least eight parking spaces.

Details of the sale, to be completed in 2024, are based on Monaco land records and emails and preliminary contracts reviewed by Bloomberg, and come from the archives of the Distributed Denial of Secrets Organization, which collects hacked and leaked material deemed to be of public interest.

“System Capital Management”, Rinat Ahmetova’s company, confirmed that it invested in that project, but did not want to give details about the real estate itself or the price.

“For more than ten years, SCM’s international investment portfolio has included a separate portfolio of prime real estate, which we have repeatedly emphasized publicly. Among these investments is the ‘Le Renzo’ project, in which we invested on the primary market in 2021,” the announcement reads.

If the stated price is confirmed, it will be the largest known purchase and sale of residential real estate in history, surpassing the recent sale of developer Nick Candy’s mansion in London’s Chelsea for more than $350 million, as well as the purchase of a penthouse in New York for about $240 million by hedge fund manager Ken Griffin.

Maretera includes 114 luxury villas, houses and apartments

Monaco, located in a rocky area between France and Italy, has long been the most expensive real estate market in the world due to its small area and status as a tax haven. Maretera has been built for more than a decade on land obtained by reclamation of the sea and includes 114 luxury villas, houses and apartments arranged around the gardens, harbor and promenade.

Akhmetov entered into the purchase agreement shortly before the start of Russian special operations in Ukraine in 2022, and the war later hit his business empire hard, including attacks on energy facilities in Ukraine.

According to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, his assets exceed seven billion dollars. The fortune is based on the company SCM, the largest industrial conglomerate in Ukraine with investments in metallurgy, mining, energy and real estate.

He has already bought luxury real estate before

Ahmetov has previously been associated with the purchase of luxury real estate, including the villa Les Cèdres on the Cote d’Azur, which he bought in 2019 for 200 million euros. This historic residence in the exclusive town of Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat was once owned by King Leopold II of Belgium.

In 2011, he allegedly bought a penthouse in the luxurious London complex One Hyde Park, opposite the Harrods department store in the Knightsbridge district, reports Index.

According to local real estate agents, prices in Maretera exceeded 100,000 euros per square meter. A three-room apartment is currently being sold for around 76 million euros, while apartments with four and five rooms are being rented for around 150,000 euros per month.
