In an American military attack in northwestern Syria, a leader associated with the Al-Qaeda terrorist network was killed, who was linked to the ISIS attack from December last year, in which two American soldiers and one American civilian were killed.
As announced by the Central Command of the United States of America (CENTCOM), the operation was carried out on January 16, and Bilal Hasan al-Jasim was killed in the attack. According to US officials, al-Jasim was directly linked to an ISIS member who carried out a deadly attack on US forces in the Palmyra area on December 13, killing two soldiers and a civilian interpreter, while wounding three other US military personnel.
The commander of CENTCOM, Admiral Brad Cooper, said that this operation represents a clear message about the determination of the United States of America in the fight against terrorism. He pointed out that there is no safe haven for those who plan, organize or instigate attacks on American citizens and soldiers.
After the December attack, then-US President Donald Trump announced a strong response, stressing that a serious retaliation would follow. As part of that response, on December 19, the US launched extensive airstrikes against ISIS targets in Syria, hitting more than 70 targets, according to US sources.
US authorities say they will continue with operations aimed at breaking up terrorist networks that pose a threat to the security of US forces and allies in the region.
