Gennaro Gattuso takes over the bench of SS Lazio and returns to Serie A after five years.
After the disappointing ninth place in the championship and the defeat in the final of the Italian Cup against Inter Milan, the president of the Roman club Claudio Lotito decided to end cooperation with the current coach Maurizio Sarri and hire Gattuso, who quickly found a new job.
Contract details revealed
According to the Italian media, the deal is practically concluded. A two-year cooperation was agreed, and the newspaper Il Tempo states that Gattuso will earn annually two million euros. Another meeting is expected in the coming days to agree on the final details of the contract.
Gattuso was without engagement for only two months, after unsuccessful episodes on the bench of the Italian national team and Bosnia’s loss to Herzegovina in additional World Cup qualifiers. Although in recent weeks he was mentioned as a candidate to take over Torino, the legendary Italian footballer will continue his career in Rome.
Gattuso’s last involvement in Serie A was during the 2020/21 season, when he won the Italian Cup with Napoli by beating Juventus. In Italy, he also managed AC Milan, Palermo FC and Pisa SC. He gained experience abroad on the benches of Valencia CF, Olympique de Marseille, OFI Crete, FC Sion and HNK Hajduk Split, which he led in the 2024/25 season. and finished in third place with 63 points.
