The investigation found that one soldier deliberately damaged a religious symbol, while another was filming everything, and six other soldiers witnessed the event without trying to stop it or report it to their superiors.
The IDF said that this behavior was a serious violation of military orders and the army’s core values.
The soldier who damaged the statue, as well as the one who filmed the incident, were removed from combat units and sentenced to 30 days of military detention, while disciplinary measures will be decided upon for the other soldiers.
The military expressed deep regret over the incident, stressing that its operations in Lebanon are directed against Hezbollah and other militant groups, not civilians.
Steps were also taken to restore the damaged symbol, and an additional warning to soldiers about their attitude towards religious objects and symbols was announced.
