Two people were killed in an Israeli attack in northeastern Lebanon, near the border with Syria, the Lebanese Ministry of Health announced. The Israeli army has confirmed that one of the victims is a member of the elite unit of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, who, they say, participated in the planning of the attack on Israel.
The attack took place in the Hermel district, in the Bekaa Valley, when an Israeli drone hit a van carrying the victims, reports the Lebanese news agency NNA. The Ministry of Health confirmed the death of two people.
The Israeli army has identified one of the dead as Hussein Mahmoud al-Jawhari, a member of the elite Quds unit of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, accused of participating in planning attacks on Israel from the territory of Syria and Lebanon.
Although a truce was reached between Israel and the Lebanese Hezbollah movement in November last year, attacks on targets in Lebanon continue. Israel justifies its military actions with claims of the alleged rearmament of Hezbollah, which is backed by Iran.
At the same time, although the ceasefire agreement foresees the withdrawal of Israeli forces, the Israeli army still maintains a presence in five areas in southern Lebanon.
The Lebanese government is facing growing pressure to complete the disarmament of Hezbollah in accordance with the deal, with Lebanese army chief Rodolphe Haykal saying the first phase of disarmament is underway and nearing completion.
