Paraguay coach Gustavo Alfaro named the final 26-man squad for the World Cup on Monday, relying heavily on foreign players, given that only three members of the squad are from Paraguay’s domestic league.
The Argentinian coach, whose contract expires after the tournament, chose an experienced team led by 33-year-old captain Gustavo Gomez.
Gomez, a Palmeiras defender and longtime national team leader, leads a squad that also includes Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder Diego Gomez, Atlanta United’s Miguel Almiron, Strasbourg forward Julio Enciso and Independiente forward Gabriel Avalos.
Paraguay begins its World Cup campaign on the 12th. June against the United States, one of the three host nations. Before traveling to the tournament, La Albirroja will take on Nicaragua in a friendly on Friday.
