The Health Insurance Institute of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina through the Solidarity Fund continuously provides significant financial resources for the treatment of insured persons suffering from rare and serious diseases, the treatment of which is often not available in the health system of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
From that institution, they state that from 2002 until today, a total of 113.59 million KM has been allocated for the treatment of hemophilia. Currently, 92 patients are being treated with therapy, and treatment costs per patient, depending on the type of therapy and clinical condition, can amount to more than one million KM per year. In 2025 alone, 10.83 million KM have been spent for this purpose.
At the end of 2023, the Solidarity Fund also started financing drugs for the treatment of cystic fibrosis. So far, 12.67 million KM have been allocated for this therapy, and 23 patients are currently being treated. The average annual cost of therapy per patient is about 500,000 KM, while funds are planned for 2025 in the amount of 12.5 million KM.
From June 2024, the treatment of patients with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is also financed. So far, 12.40 million KM has been set aside for this purpose, and 26 patients are currently receiving treatment. The average annual cost of treatment per patient is around 400,000 KM, while for 2025 funds of nine million KM are planned.
On the basis of the Conclusion of the Government of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina from July 9, 2024, which adopted the information of the Federal Ministry of Health on the provision of therapy for one patient with acute intermittent porphyria, the Institute started the procurement of medicine in the amount of 711,347.49 KM from November 2024.
In addition to financing medicines, the Solidarity Fund also provides funds for treatment abroad in cases where appropriate treatment is not available in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and there is a real possibility of successful treatment. Special emphasis is placed on the treatment of children suffering from extremely rare diseases. For this purpose, more than 24 million KM have been set aside in the past 20 years.
