Born in San Mateo, California, Daniel began playing chess at the age of six and quickly rose through the ranks to become one of the brightest American talents of his generation.
He won the World Chess Championship for under-12s in 2007, and he won the grandmaster title in 2013 when he was only 18 years old.
Over the years he has represented the United States in multiple national and international tournaments, defeating some of the strongest players in the world.
Outside of competition, Daniel has become a beloved figure in the chess community through his teaching, commentary and streaming, inspiring countless players with his calm insight and love of the game.
He served as Grandmaster in Residence at the Charlotte Chess Center and was known for his engaging presence on YouTube and Twitch, where hundreds of thousands of people learned from him.
