Thai Defense Ministry spokesman Surasant Kongsiri said Bangkok “hopes for a positive outcome” but that success depends on the sincerity of the Cambodian side. Thailand is asking for a first ceasefire and cooperation in demining the border, while Cambodia expects Thailand’s sincerity in implementing the agreement.
The dispute stems from territorial disputes over an 800-kilometer long border and several ancient temple ruins. Both sides accuse each other of attacks on civilians, while the United States, China and Malaysia have previously brokered a short-lived truce.
