The owners of the Adler vessel are on the European Union’s sanctions list, said Martin Hoglund, a spokesman for the customs administration.
– Shortly after one o’clock last night, we boarded the ship with the support of the Swedish coast guard and the police service in order to perform a customs inspection. The review is still ongoing – Hoglund said.
Hoglund declined to say what Customs found on board.
According to the ship tracking service Marine Traffic, the Adler is a 126 meter long container carrier. It is anchored off Hoganas in southwestern Sweden.
In addition to the Adler being on the EU sanctions list, the vessel and its owners, M Leasing LLC, are also subject to US sanctions for suspected involvement in weapons shipments, according to OpenSanctions, a database of sanctioned firms and individuals, persons of interest and government watch lists.
Hoglund said the ship left the Russian port of St. Petersburg on December 15, but added that customs had no information about its destination, Reuters reported.
