German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier strongly criticized the foreign policy of the United States under the leadership of President Donald Trump and called on the world not to allow the international world order to disintegrate into the “law of the stronger” or “the inn of robbers” where the unscrupulous take what they want.
In unusually sharp remarks that appeared to refer to recent events such as the ouster of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, the former foreign minister said global democracy is under attack today like never before.
Although the German president’s role is largely ceremonial, his words carry moral and symbolic weight, and he has more freedom of expression than many politicians with executive power.
Steinmeier pointed out that the annexation of Crimea by Russia and the full invasion of Ukraine represented a turning point for the international order, but he said that the behavior of the US represents another historical turning point.
– It is about preventing the world from turning into a shelter for bandits, where the harshest take what they want, where regions or entire countries are treated as the property of a few big powers – he said at the symposium on Wednesday evening.
He emphasized that active international intervention is needed in threatening situations, and that countries like Brazil and India should be convinced to protect the world order and the values of democracy.
These criticisms reflect broader concerns among leading international actors about the direction of US foreign policy and its impact on international law and stability.
