The leaders of Great Britain and France will host a virtual meeting of world officials on Friday to discuss efforts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
Representatives from around 40 countries are expected to attend, who will discuss support for the fragile truce with Iran, as well as the security and re-establishment of maritime routes through this strategically important passage.
In a statement from the office of the British Prime Minister, it was stated that world leaders will work to establish an international mission with the aim of reopening the strait. It is, as stated, a strictly defensive mission that would include joint military engagement as soon as conditions permit.
The meeting will also discuss support for the work of the International Maritime Organization in order to ensure the safety of ships and their crews.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is scheduled to arrive in Paris on Friday morning, where he will host a meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz will also attend the rally, according to German officials.
– The unconditional and immediate reopening of the strait is a global responsibility and we must act to ensure the smooth flow of energy and trade – Starmer is expected to tell the participants.
The British Prime Minister will also stress the need to boost confidence in commercial shipping and support mine clearance operations.
According to officials, Germany is ready to contribute to ensuring safe passage through the strait, with a clear legal framework. That contribution could include minesweepers or maritime surveillance, in which the German armed forces have considerable experience.
