“They cannot decide, without consulting their allies or anyone else, what kind of peace or rules will prevail in the world,” Robles told a parliamentary committee on Spain’s position on the Iran war.
“We cannot accept that two countries decide that the whole world goes to war – their war,” she added, according to Fena.
She described the war in Iran as “against international law” and stated that the Spanish government was “forced” to make strategic decisions based on respect for national and international legal frameworks.
Robles pointed out that since the start of the conflict on February 28, Spain has banned the use of US military bases in Rota and Moron, as well as its airspace for Iran-related operations. It also revealed that Washington had sought approval to use Spanish bases to attack Iran without providing key details about the scope or duration of the operation.
“No one knows what is the goal of this war, what is the reason – whether it is political, economic or serves as a screen (smoke screen),” she said, warning that the conflict could become protracted and unpredictable.
Robles emphasized that Spain’s position does not represent a break in transatlantic ties or its obligations towards NATO. She also stated that Spain is “not considering” the withdrawal of US troops from military bases in the country.
Last month, US President Donald Trump threatened to cut off all trade with Spain over its stance on the Iran war and its refusal to cooperate in the attacks. However, Economy Minister Carlos Cuerpo said on Monday that the disagreements over the conflict had not affected commercial relations between the two countries.
