In a statement released by Spain’s Foreign Ministry on Saturday, Madrid reiterated its commitment to Lebanon’s security and stability, stressing that both are vital to the wider region.
The statement called on Israel to fulfill its obligations under international law and called on all parties to fully comply with UN Security Council Resolution 1701, as well as the ceasefire agreement reached in November 2024.
The government reaffirmed its support for the mandate of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) and demanded respect for the mission’s personnel and positions, condemning recent Israeli attacks on peacekeepers.
The statement stressed that Israel must respect the peacekeeping forces, including the Spanish contingent deployed in southern Lebanon as mandated by the resolution.
– Spain reiterates its call for respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Lebanon and its support for the measures taken by the government of President Joseph Aoun to ensure the state’s monopoly on the use of force throughout the Lebanese territory, the strengthening of the Lebanese armed forces and their effective redeployment in the south of the country – the statement said.
The statements come amid an escalation of Israel’s military campaign in Lebanon since Monday, following limited Hezbollah rocket fire amid broader regional tensions linked to the war Israel and the US are waging against Iran.
Israel killed more than 4,000 people and wounded around 17,000 during an offensive in Lebanon that began in October 2023 and escalated into a full-scale war in September 2024.
Despite a November 2024 cease-fire agreement with Hezbollah, Israel has continued almost daily violations that have left hundreds dead and wounded.
