Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez asked NATO to exclude him from his goal of defending allocation to five percent of GDP, according to the Secretary General of the Association Mark Rutte, and in which Reuters had insight.
Sanchez has requested a “more flexible formula” that will either do to achieve that goal voluntarily or out of it, except Spain, Hina reports.
“The commitment to a target of five percent would not be unreasonable, but also counterproductive because Spain would remain more from optimal expenditures and disrupted the current efforts of the European Union to strengthen its own security and defense,” Sanchez wrote in the letter.
He added that the new goal, who proposed the United States, “incompatible with our country of well-being and our worldview”.
Madrid estimates that it will take 2.1 percent of its GDP to meet Spanish military needs, Sanchez said.
