Oklahoma City Thunder star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander was named the NBA’s Most Valuable Player for the second consecutive season, the league announced Sunday night.
Gilgeous-Alexander is 14th player in league history who won two consecutive MVP awards. He is the first player to win back-to-back MVP awards since Denver Nuggets center Nikola Jokic in the 2020/21 seasons. and 2021/22. and the first point guard to win back-to-back MVP awards since Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry in the 2014/15 seasons. and 2015/16.
Gilgeous-Alexander won 83 votes for first place and won convincingly with 939 points in a vote by a panel of 100 voters who follow the NBA.
Jokic received 10 first-place votes and finished second in the voting with 634 points. Victor Wembanyama of the San Antonio Spurs was third with 589 points and five first-place votes.
Having signed four-year, super maximum contract extension worth $273.3 million in the offseason, Gilgeous-Alexander averaged 31.1 points, 6.6 assists and 4.3 rebounds in 68 games (all in the starting lineup) this season as Oklahoma City went 64-18 at the end of the regular season, the best record in the NBA.

Gilgeous-Alexander became the first player since the legendary Wilt Chamberlain (1963/64) who scored 20+ points in every regular season game, with a minimum of 50 games played. He also broke Chamberlain’s record of 126 consecutive 20-point attempts, and his streak is 140 heading into next season.
It was last year led by the Thunder to their first NBA title, and Oklahoma City opens the Western Conference Finals against the San Antonio Spurs on Monday.

Gilgeous-Alexander joins To Steve Nash as the only Canadian to win the NBA Most Valuable Player award. Nash also won twice, in the 2004/05 seasons. and 2005/06. with the Phoenix Suns.
Jokić, three-time MVPaveraged 27.7 points, 12.9 rebounds and 10.7 assists in 65 regular season games (all in the starting lineup).
Wembanyamawhich unanimously won the award for defensive player of the yearaveraged a career-high 25.0 points and 11.5 rebounds and led the league with 3.1 blocks per game.
Luka Doncic from the Los Angeles Lakers finished in fourth place (250 points), Cade Cunningham (117) from the Detroit Pistons was fifth, and Jaylen Brown (89) from the Boston Celtics was sixth.
