The appearance known as the “miracle of Jindo” (Jindo Miracle Sea Road Festival) is a fascinating natural phenomenon that occurs several times a year in Jindo Islands in South Korea.
What is the “miracle Jindo”? It is a natural tidal phenomenon, when a narrow sandy road opens about 2.8 kilometers long and up to 40 meters wide, which connects the island of Jindo with a small nearby island Modo.
During that period, the sea is literally withdrawn and thousands of people can walk between two islands – something like the famous biblical “sea separation.”
This phenomenon lasts 30 to 60 minutes and occurs two to three times a year, most often between February and June, at the time of a special tidal cycle (low teens).
Why is that happening?
The phenomenon is the result of an extremely low axis due to a combination of lunar cycle, geographical position and sea currents. Although it looks like a “miracle,” is completely natural phenomenon.
From “miracles” to science: What really causes the separation of the sea?
This event was attracted to the world’s attention in 1975. Thanks to the then French ambassador in South Korea, Pierre Landi, who described the phenomenon as “Korean version of Mosesi Miracles”, alluding to the biblical separation of the Red Sea.
However, despite romantic names and legends, science offers a very rational explanation: the phenomenon occurs due to extremely low teens, caused by the phenomenon known as tidal harmonics.
Namely, the gravitational impact of the moon and the sun on the ocean surface causes changes in sea level – high and low tides. But except their position, additional factors such as country rotation, the distance of celestial bodies and other rhythmic forms, affect the appearance of extremely low teens who “exposite” this path.

Legend about “wonder sea”
According to the tradition, Tigar once attacked the village on Jindo a long time ago, so the inhabitants were saved by fleeing of Modo Island. For days she prayed “to the God of the Sea,” Jongwang, who spoke in his dreams and said that the next day, the sea would open “long” he will be able to join his family.
