Strained relations with Trump
Sánchez condemned the US-Israeli attacks on Iran as “unjustified” and “dangerous”, saying that Spain’s position is “no to war”.
His government went beyond mere rhetoric. Madrid has not allowed US forces to use the jointly operated Rota naval base and Morón air base in southern Spain for operations against Iran.
This prompted President Donald Trump to threaten to cut off all trade relations with Spain.
The Sánchez government then closed its airspace to American planes that participated in attacks on Iran.
