The aim of the system is to transfer part of the border procedures to the digital level, before the arrival of the passengers at the border.
The application allows users to submit their information in advance, including scanning a biometric passport via NFC technology, taking a selfie photo for identification, and answering basic questions about the purpose and duration of the trip.
After processing the data, the passenger receives a bar code that he shows to the officer at the border crossing, which, in theory, speeds up control. All information must be submitted at least 72 hours before travel.
However, the system is still in the early stages of implementation. The first users report technical difficulties, while some border crossings still lack the infrastructure for so-called “fast lanes” for app users.
Official information on the full application of the system at certain border crossings, including those of Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia, has not yet been confirmed.
The biggest benefits for now are recorded by passengers at major European airports, where automated control systems have already been installed.
The introduction of the application comes after warnings that the new EES system could cause large crowds and delays, especially in the tourist season.
Whether “Travel to Europe” will really speed up border crossing or become an additional administrative step will be shown in the coming months of implementation on the ground.
