NATO chief Mark Rutte said the success of the military alliance’s annual nuclear exercise this month gave him “absolute confidence in the credibility of NATO’s nuclear deterrent” in the face of Russian threats.
– When Russia uses dangerous and reckless nuclear rhetoric, our population must know that there is no need to panic, because NATO has a strong nuclear deterrent – German weekly Welt am Sonntag quoted his words.
– And Russian President Vladimir Putin must know that a nuclear war can never be won and must never be fought – he said.
Putin has repeatedly warned the West about the potential nuclear fallout from a Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
He said last month that Russia could use nuclear weapons if hit by conventional missiles and that Moscow would consider any attack on it, backed by a nuclear power, a joint attack, Reuters reports.
