“The activity targets individuals of high intelligence interest, such as current and former US government officials, military personnel, politicians, and journalists,” the alert said.
The agencies point out that the fundamental security of the applications and their encryption have not been breached. Instead, hackers manage to bypass protection by impersonating themselves and tricking users into revealing their security codes themselves. Signal and the Russian Embassy in Washington did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
This US warning coincides with one issued earlier this month by Dutch intelligence officials. They reported at the time that Russian-backed hackers had launched a global cyber campaign to gain access to Signal and WhatsApp accounts used by officials and other intelligence officials.
Signal responded to that warning by clarifying that the attacks “are carried out through sophisticated phishing campaigns, designed to trick users into sharing information” and emphasized that their encryption and infrastructure were not compromised.
