Russia warned on Thursday that any European countries that accept the deployment of French strategic bombers capable of carrying nuclear weapons will become targets of attack by Russian forces in the event of a conflict.
French President Emmanuel Macron announced plans in March to expand the country’s nuclear arsenal and said France could allow European partners to temporarily use its nuclear-capable aircraft.
Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grusko said in an interview published Thursday that it was part of the “uncontrolled build-up” of NATO’s nuclear potential, which poses a strategic threat to Russia.
He emphasized Moscow’s concerns about potential French nuclear deployments in other European countries. Macron said Paris was discussing such arrangements with Great Britain, Germany, Poland, the Netherlands, Belgium, Greece, Sweden and Denmark, according to Reuters.
