The five members of the jury, who will select the Gold and Silver Lion award winners from among 110 participants, said they felt obliged to commit “to the defense of human rights” as part of their role at the event, which opens on May 9.
“This jury will refrain from considering those countries whose leaders are currently accused of crimes against humanity by the International Criminal Court,” the statement said, without naming Russia and Israel.
The ICC has issued arrest warrants for current leaders, including Russian President Vladimir Putin for alleged war crimes committed against children in Ukraine, and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity during the Gaza war.
The Israeli and Russian embassies in Rome did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
