“I saw that Zelensky said that and it’s unfortunate that he said that because he knows it’s not true,” added Rubio. Negotiations on ending the four-year war are still at a dead end, reminds France Presse.
Zelensky previously told Reuters that the United States had offered its security guarantees needed for a peace deal in Ukraine on the condition that Kiev cede the eastern Donbass region to Russia.
This statement was welcomed by the special Russian envoy Kirill Dmitriyev, saying that Moscow “can’t help but look forward to it”.
“He said an important thing… he finally realized that the US position is such that it will support security guarantees only if Ukraine leaves Donbas,” the Russian said.
The Donbas region consists of Luhansk and Donetsk regions. According to the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), Russia almost completely controls Luhansk and about 75 percent of the Donetsk region.
