NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte said today that the Alliance wants Ukraine to be a “proudly sovereign state” that goes forward after being achieved just and lasting peace.
Rutte said in an interview for the Ukrainian portal “New Voice.ua” that Russian President Vladimir Putin should never try to attack Ukraine again.
NATO Secretary-General stated that the Alliance closely cooperates with the Ukrainian army to approach NATO standards and to be supported without bringing to the Western ally in a direct conflict with Russia.
He reminded that at the summit in Washington was decided that the road of Ukraine was irrevocable, but he emphasized that he did not know when he would exactly become a member of the Alliance.
Rutte reminded that the US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that “that NATO does not exist, we would invent it.”
“I think the United States is fully dedicated to NATO. Their main dissatisfaction is that European Allies and Canada are insufficient on defense. But now we spend much more,” Rutte pointed out.
When it comes to possible sending of European peacecuts in Ukraine after attaining peace, Rutte said that the Alliance was unlikely to participate in the mission as such, but that certain Member States may be involved.
Asked whether the war in Ukraine will end this year, Rutte replied that he wanted nothing to predict, because he can’t, but that he wants the war to end tomorrow
