Matjaž Kek is the new coach of HNK Rijeka. The most trophy-winning strategist in the club’s history returned to the bench where he sat in as many as 274 games, of which 201 in the HNL, 42 in European competitions and 31 in the Cup and Supercup.
Kek is a coach with Rijeka won the first championship title in the club’s history, lifted two Croatian Cup trophies and one Super Cup and achieved the most victories on the Rijeka bench (165 in all competitions) with an average of 2.04 points won per game, i.e. an average of 1.97 goals scored. In his first term at the helm of the Whites, he spent 2,045 days, leading the team from February 27, 2013 to October 6, 2018.
Under the leadership of Matjaž Kek, Rijeka football players played some of the most important European matches in the club’s history, won three appearances in the group stage of the Europa League and were close to qualifying for the Champions League. Under his leadership, Rijeka defeated greats such as Milan, Feyenoord, Standard Liege and Stuttgartremained undefeated against Sevilla, Betis and RB Salzburg and, for the first time in the club’s history, seriously positioned itself on the European football map.
After almost eight years, Matjaž Kek is returning to Rujevica, to a team full of playing potential that is eager to make a new breakthrough and fight for the highest goals.
