According to estimates by the United Nations, girls born in Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2024 can expect a life expectancy of 81.1 years, while for boys that estimate is 74.6 years. At the same time, the data on healthy years of life show that in BiH women are estimated to be up to 67.5 years old, and men up to 65 years old.
According to the World Happiness Report for 2025, Bosnia and Herzegovina achieved a happiness index of 6.136 and took 56th place on the world list. Thus, it was ranked better than Montenegro, which has an index of 5.877, and Croatia, whose index is 5.868.
The happiness index is based on an assessment of one’s own satisfaction with life, and takes into account several factors, including economic conditions, social support, healthy years of life, a sense of freedom, generosity and the perception of corruption. Data for 2025 in the World Happiness Report is based on the average of responses from 2022–2024.
At the top of the list is still Finland with a score of 7,736, followed by Denmark with 7,521, Iceland with 7,515 and Sweden with 7,345. For years, these countries have held leading positions when it comes to life satisfaction.
When it comes to life expectancy in Finland, the OECD states that it is around 82 years, with women living on average around 85 and men 79 years. The OECD Better Life Index also shows that 96 percent of people in Finland believe they have someone they can count on when they need help.
Data from the BiH Agency for Statistics show that the average age of those who died in Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2023 was 77.5 years for women and 71.8 years for men.
