Speaking to Sky, Rakitić thanked Džeka for the contribution he made to the club in returning to the elite ranks of German football.
“Dear Edin, what can I say to you as a Schalke fan? First of all, thank you very much for making that move and for helping us win a return to the Bundesliga. You have to stay there. You have to keep going full throttle and keep the boys together. They listen to you,” said Rakitić.
The former midfielder added that he believes Dzeko still has a lot to offer German football.
“Please stay there a little longer. I believe that in general the entire Bundesliga loves you. Thank you, Edin,” said Rakitić.
Dzeka’s contract with Schalke expires on June 30, and a decision on his future is expected after the conclusion of the upcoming FIFA World Cup. The experienced striker played an important role in Schalke’s return to the Bundesliga this season, which is why fans and club legends want him to stay.
Although they played in Germany at the same time during their careers, Rakitić and Dzeko never played together in the same club. Dzeko played for VfL Wolfsburg from 2007 to 2011, while Rakitić played for Schalke before moving to Sevilla.
