Russian President Vladimir Putin has warned US President Donald Trump that continuing military operations against Iran would be “dangerous and unacceptable”, stressing the serious consequences such a move could have for global security.
According to information from the Kremlin, during the telephone conversation with Trump, Putin emphasized that the renewal of the conflict, especially the launch of a ground operation on Iranian territory, would represent a high risk not only for Iran but also for the wider international community. His foreign policy adviser, Yuri Ushakov, reported that Moscow was warning of “severe consequences” if fighting continued despite the existing ceasefire.
Tensions rose further after Trump earlier in the day rejected Tehran’s latest proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, keeping the blockade in place and sending the conflict into a new phase of stalemate.
The issue of negotiations was also touched upon in the conversation between the two leaders. Putin assessed that the extension of the truce was a “correct decision” because it opens up space for diplomacy and stabilization of the situation. Trump, on the other hand, presented his own assessment of the current course of the military operation.
Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, Trump said he had a “very good conversation” with Putin, adding that the Russian president had even offered him help with uranium enrichment. However, Trump emphasized that he would prefer to see Russia engaged in ending the war in Ukraine.
At the same time, the war between Russia and Ukraine, which has been going on for more than four years, continues to represent one of the key global security challenges.
US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth told Congress that Iran’s nuclear facilities had been “destroyed”, which caused sharp reactions and doubts among lawmakers.
Along with Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen. Dan Caine, Hegseth is participating in discussions on the 2027 defense budget proposal, which foresees a record Pentagon spending of $1.5 trillion.
The conflict with Iran, launched in February without congressional approval, has already been estimated at around $25 billion, adding to political tensions in Washington. Representatives from both parties are looking for clearer answers about the goals and consequences of the intervention.
Hegseth dismissed the criticism, arguing that political discord is undermining American efforts. “The biggest challenge is not external enemies, but the irresponsible statements of certain politicians,” he said during the hearing.
Although both Trump and the US administration emphasize the desire for a quick solution to the conflict with Iran, their statements suggest that the crisis could take some time, Index reports.
Currently, the United States and Iran are in a stalemate. Washington shows no willingness to accept Iran’s proposal to open the Strait of Hormuz in exchange for an end to the war, the lifting of the naval blockade and the postponement of nuclear negotiations.
On the other hand, Tehran is not giving up its nuclear ambitions, which remains one of the key contentious issues and the main obstacle to achieving a lasting solution.
