The head of the Roman Catholic Church, Pope Leo XIV, told diplomats at the Vatican on Friday that war was “back in fashion”, in a speech in which he warned against saber-rattling and the weakness of multilateralism.
– Diplomacy that promotes dialogue and seeks consensus among all parties has been replaced by diplomacy based on force, whether by individuals or groups of allies – said the pope.
– War is back in fashion and the ardor for war is spreading – added the first American Pope.
Lav warned that the principle established after the Second World War, which prohibits states from using force to violate others’ borders, has been “completely undermined”.
– Peace is sought through weapons as a condition for confirming one’s own dominance. This seriously threatens the rule of law, which is the foundation of every peaceful civil coexistence – said the Pope.
The pontiff highlighted the “weakness of multilateralism” as “a particular cause for concern at the international level.”
He emphasized that respect for international humanitarian law “is an obligation that states have assumed” and that such law “must always prevail over the ambitions of warring parties”.
– We cannot ignore that the destruction of hospitals, energy infrastructure, homes and places crucial to everyday life is a serious violation of international humanitarian law – the pope concluded.
