Speaking during Sunday’s Angelus, the pope said the good of the Venezuelan people must take precedence over all other interests. He called for a path of justice and peace that guarantees the sovereignty of the country, the rule of law and respect for human and civil rights, with joint work to build a stable and peaceful future.
The Pope also appealed for help to the poorest who are suffering due to the difficult economic situation. According to IMF data, Venezuela’s economy has fallen to 28 percent of its 2013 level.
He also reminded that last December he warned about the possibility of American military intervention. He is also connected to the crisis through his earlier work in Peru, where he helped Venezuelan refugees for more than 20 years.
The Church in Venezuela actively participates in peace efforts, and its influence is also present in the Vatican, where important functions are performed by high-ranking church officials connected to that country.
