Pensioners in the Federation of BiH finally have news that sounds like a relief: the next pension payment has already been announced with an increase of 11.7 percent. In practice, this would mean that the minimum pension could increase from the current 599 KM to around 668 KM.
And it shouldn’t stop there. It was announced that another increase of about 6 percent is planned in July, so the total increase in pensions in 2026 could amount to about 17 percent. If everything is realized as announced, the minimum pension could reach approximately 700 KM by the end of the year.
But, there is an important “but”: in order for this increase to go automatically and according to the new rules, an amendment to the Law on MIO must be adopted. The Federation of Pensioners’ Associations says that the middle of January is the deadline for the FBiH Government to fulfill the agreement and submit changes to the law in the procedure because without the law there is no new way of harmonizing.
Pensioners warn that their expenses have long since escaped, especially food, medicine and utilities, and that they are not asking for any privileges, but only that after years of work they can live with dignity, without constant fear of whether they will “push” the moon.
Federal Minister of Labor and Social Policy Adnan Delić explains that the new law introduces a new adjustment formula that would be more favorable for pensioners: a combination of an increase in the average salary and an increase in the cost of living, in the ratio of 60% salary and 40% prices. The bottom line is that the alignment is in favor of the user, with an indicator that is more favorable.
Another important change that is being announced is that pensions would be adjusted twice a year at the beginning and in the middle of the year instead of waiting for a long time and for people to watch prices rise for months while the pension remains stagnant. The minister emphasizes that the law does not foresee any reductions in pensions, nor does it encroach on the acquired rights of current beneficiaries.
In the background of the whole story is also the mathematics of the system in the FBiH budget for 2026, a large amount is planned for the Federal Institute of MIO, and the authorities emphasize that they have done analyzes and taken into account the demography of the less able-bodied, more elderly, which means that any reform must be carefully “tightened” so that the system remains sustainable, he writes Black Chronicle.
