Photos of the passport appeared on Darkweb, including the documents of the citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Such situations cause concerns due to possible abuse, including identity theft, financial fraud and illegal activity.
One of the persons who encountered this data and which warned through its Facebook profile to this abuse was Arnela Šabanović, certified analyst of cyber security and ethical hacker.
She says that it is still valid passports, which means that their owners can be exposed to different types of abuse.
“DarkWeba often sells stolen identities used to open false orders on crypto-stock exchanges. In this way, criminals can wash their money or perform financial fraud without disclosing their real identity. It is especially worrying when these data is connected to the cryptodes, because then it becomes even harder to enter the trace of real perpetrators, “our interlocutor explains.
She emphasizes that most people are not even aware of how much data is daily shared and how much they are at risk. Since logging in to prize games and loyalty programs to leaving the passport scenes in hotels and travel agencies – all this can lead to identity theft.
“The worst is that these data are available practically everyone who is willing to pay them, without any control where they will end. The only difference is that when the data is completed on Darkweb, someone is traded directly, while in other cases it is done under the “personalized experience ‘”, adds.
Although sending a passport scan in hotels and travel agencies has become standard practice, our interlocutor points out that citizens should be more careful in sharing personal documents.
“Completely avoid such situations is difficult, but what we can do is to restrict the sharing of such data as much as possible, we use services that offer additional protection and be aware of where to whom we send our documents,” Shabanović points out.
She emphasized that this case once again shows how important it is to handle personal data carefully and be aware of digital threats that lurk in the online world, writes Avaz.
