While much of the world’s attention is focused on the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, Pakistan has opened six land transit routes for goods destined for Iran.
The Ministry of Commerce issued an order on the transit of goods through Pakistan’s territory in 2026 on April 25, with immediate effect, formalizing a land corridor through the country to address freight backlogs.
The order allows goods originating from third countries to be transported through Pakistan and delivered to Iran by road.
About 3,000 Iranian shipping containers have already been detained at the ports of Karachi and Gwadar since the conflict began two months ago.
Six designated routes connect Pakistan’s main ports – Karachi, Port Qasim and Gwadar – with two Iranian border crossings, Gabd and Taftan, passing through the southwestern province of Baluchistan, which borders Iran.
The commerce ministry’s announcement is based on a 2008 agreement between Islamabad and Tehran that allows goods and passengers to be transported by road. Until now, Iran has not used these routes because it has relied on its own ports for trade.
