Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha reacted to the statements of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, who said on social networks that the attitude of the Hungarian leadership is as “unclear” today as it was in 1939.
Orbán spoke to reporters after the European Council summit, where EU leaders agreed on joint borrowing in the amount of 90 billion euros for financial support to Ukraine. However, Hungary, Slovakia and the Czech Republic refused to participate in that plan, further strengthening the bloc of states skeptical of Kiev.
Such a decision further undermined the unity of the European Union, especially after leaders failed to reach an agreement on using more than 200 billion euros of frozen Russian state assets to help Ukraine.
On the eve of the summit, Orbán also revealed that Putin had warned him about how Russia would react if the EU reached for these assets. According to him, Putin announced “a strong response with all available instruments of international law”, taking into account the position of each individual member of the Union.
“That’s how we Hungarians protected ourselves,” concluded Orbán.
