Last week, the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, announced that the EU would help reopen the pipeline. Budapest and Bratislava are also blocking, for the same reasons related to the Druzhba pipeline, the official adoption of new economic sanctions against Russia confirmed by other EU countries.
According to analysts of the Hungarian Oeconomus Economic Research Foundation, which is considered close to the authorities, Hungary has become one of the main suppliers of gas to Ukraine.
“The volume and share of natural gas coming from Hungary has been steadily increasing since 2022,” rising from 2.5 percent to 14 percent in the first ten months of 2025, according to an analysis published in February.
