Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban re-causes tensions within the European Union (EU), requiring that Brussels initiate direct negotiations with Russia on the interruption of war in Ukraine.
If this does not happen, the Orban threatens to block the forthcoming EU summit.
In the letter referred to by the President of the European Council Antonio Costi, Orban emphasized that the Union should take the initiative and start a dialogue with Moscow to achieve a ceasefire and lasting peace.
Tomorrow’s meeting in London, under the auspices of the British Prime Minister Keira Starmer, could be a key temptation for the EU unity. Orban’s hardline position is further enhanced by tensions, while Ukraine is facing serious challenges on the front.
In addition to the London Summit, the EU leaders gather on Thursday in Brussels to discuss strengthening the defense capacities of Europe and agreed a new package of military assistance in Ukraine. Orban’s insistence in negotiations with Russia further complicates the achievement of consensus among EU member members.
