This is the first time that the Government of the Netherlands will activate the plan, which was designed during the energy crisis caused by Russia’s war in Ukraine.
The activation of the first phase means that fuel markets are disrupted, with no immediate shortages. At this stage, energy markets will be closely monitored as government and industry prepare for a worsening situation.
Prime Minister Rob Jetten said yesterday that his government would announce measures to offset rising energy costs on Monday. They are expected to include tax breaks for car owners, but not a cut in fuel taxes.
