Marco Odermatt achieved a convincing victory in today’s downhill race in Wengen, confirmed the leading position in the overall World Cup standings and once again demonstrated his great form this season.
The traditional mid-January ski weekend in Wengen today brought one of the most demanding disciplines, and the Swiss, with starting number seven, crossed the finish line in 1:33.14. This made him significantly faster than the Austrian Vincent Kriechmayr, whom he surpassed by 79 hundredths of a second. Third place was won by the Italian Giovanni Franzoni, who was 90 hundredths of a second behind the winner.
For Odermatt, this is the 52nd victory in his career in the World Cup, and the seventh in the downhill discipline. In addition, he has won 29 times in the giant slalom and 16 times in the super-giant slalom, which further confirms his status as one of the most successful skiers today.
Odermatt now leads the downhill standings with 280 points, 50 more than Franjo von Allmen, who finished today’s race in fourth place. In the overall standings of the World Cup, the Swiss has 1,105 points and is in a convincing lead, while the second-placed Lucas Pinheiro Braathen is far behind with 538 points.
