Nobel Peace Prize laureate Narges Mohammadi of Iran has been taken to a hospital in Tehran and has been granted a suspended prison sentence on high bail, a foundation run by her family has announced.
Narges Mohammadi (54) received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2023, while she was in prison for campaigning to promote women’s rights and to abolish the death penalty.
At the end of March, she had a heart attack. At the Mashhad Detention Center, she was unconscious in her cell for more than an hour before being taken to the infirmary.
Despite the emergency and clear signs of a heart attack, the authorities refused to transfer her to hospital or allow her to be seen by a specialist.
Instead, they took her to Iran’s even stricter Zanjan prison, Reuters points out.
Her family subsequently requested a transfer from that prison, known for its harsh conditions and violation of prisoners’ rights.
She is now in Tehran Pars Hospital where she was transported by ambulance.
The team of her doctors is treating her there, the Narges Mohammadi Foundation announced.
Mohammadi was sentenced to a new prison term of 7.5 years, the foundation announced in February, before the United States and Israel launched a war against Iran. The Nobel committee then called on Tehran to release her immediately.
She was arrested in December after she publicly condemned the death of lawyer Khosrow Alikordi. The prosecutor told reporters that she made provocative remarks at Alicordi’s memorial service.
Iran shut down most of the country’s internet in January as authorities cracked down on mass protests fueled by economic unrest. Human rights groups have reported numerous executions of people who took part in the protests.
