The Iran-backed Houthis are ready to join the war against the US and Israel, Iran’s state-run Tasnim news agency claimed, citing an “informed source”.
The Houthis, also known as Yemeni Ansarullah, are ready to take control of the Bab al-Mandab Strait, which would be an “easy task”, the report said, citing an unnamed source.
This group has already caused major disturbances in the Red Sea in October 2023, firing on hundreds of Israeli targets in retaliation for Israeli attacks on Gaza.
They also targeted ships linked to the US and the UK, disrupting the flow of global trade. Repulse efforts failed to stop the attacks.
US and other Western navies track the ships through the sea, but if the Houthis decide to take control of the Bab al-Mandab strait, that would likely further limit their options.
The Strait of Bab al-Mandab is a vital passage between the Mediterranean and Arabian seas, connecting Europe with Africa and Asia in the oceans beyond.
