A new batch of so-called “Epstein documents” released on Tuesday contain numerous references to Donald Trump, including a claim by a senior US attorney that the then US president was on a flight in the 1990s with now-deceased convicted child sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and a 20-year-old woman.
There is no indication that the woman was the victim of any crime, and her appearance in the files does not imply any criminal conduct.
This batch of US Justice Department documents follows a similar release last week detailing Epstein’s ties to economist Larry Summers and a letter to convicted sex offender and gymnastics coach Larry Nassar.
Among the references to Trump is an email suggesting Trump traveled on Epstein’s private jet with women who could be witnesses in the case against Epstein’s associate Ghislaine Maxwell.
In its email, sent on January 7, 2020, from the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, titled “Epstein flight records,” it said:
“For your information, I want you to know that the passenger records we obtained yesterday show that Donald Trump traveled on Epstein’s private jet many more times than previously reported, including during the period when an indictment in the Maxwell case would have been expected. Specifically, he was listed as a passenger on at least eight flights between 1993 and 1996, including at least four flights on which Maxwell was also present.”
During his presidential campaign, Trump promised to release files related to Epstein. The Justice Department released nearly 30,000 additional pages of documents on Tuesday and noted that “some of these documents contain inaccurate and sensationalist allegations against President Trump.” The ministry stressed that the claims were baseless and false, but released the documents in accordance with legal obligations and to protect Epstein’s victims.
Among the documents are a letter Epstein allegedly sent to Larry Nassar while in prison, as well as numerous details about a controversial 2007 plea deal in Florida that settled his sex-crimes charge.
Prince Andrew also appears in the documents, and an Austrian passport photo with Epstein’s photo is included, while the name is given as “Marius Fortelni”.
Senator Chuck Schumer called for greater transparency from the Justice Department, stressing the need to explain who was on the list of potential Epstein accomplices, how they were involved and why they were not prosecuted.
