The truce, reached after talks between the two countries’ delegations in Washington last week, was due to expire on Sunday. According to Lebanese authorities, nearly 2,500 people have been killed in Lebanon since Israel launched its offensive following the Hezbollah attack.
Israel controls a 5- to 10-kilometer-wide strip in southern Lebanon, claiming that it wants to protect the northern part of Israel from attacks by Hezbollah, which fired hundreds of rockets during the conflict.
