Unlike previous versions, the new draft resolution supporting US President Donald Trump’s Gaza peace plan offers a path to Palestinian statehood, which the Israeli government has long and staunchly opposed.
“Our opposition to a Palestinian state in any territory has not changed,” Netanyahu said as he opened Sunday’s cabinet meeting.
He said he didn’t need “lectures from anyone” on this issue.
Far-right minister Bezalel Smotrich accused him on Saturday of remaining silent since France and several other countries recognized the State of Palestine in September.
“Immediately formulate a decent and firm answer that will make it clear to the whole world: there will never be a Palestinian state on the soil of our homeland,” Smotrich wrote on Xu.
Another far-right figure in the government, Itamar Ben-Gvir, wrote on social media that his Jewish Power party will not be part of “any government that accepts” the establishment of a Palestinian state, Hina reports.
Defense Minister Israel Katz and Foreign Minister Gideon Saar also reiterated their rejection of any Palestinian state on Xu.
The US draft resolution supports Donald Trump’s plan, which on October 10 led to the implementation of a fragile ceasefire in the Gaza Strip after two years of war.
