Israel’s Attorney General’s Office approved Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s request to postpone today’s hearing in the corruption case, Israeli media reported.
According to the allegations, the prosecution accepted that the planned hearing be temporarily postponed, while the Prime Minister’s request for an additional postponement of the appearance before the court will be considered later.
The trial, which has been going on for years, has already been postponed several times, and the reason given this time was security and diplomatic reasons related to current events in the region, including tensions after recent conflicts.
Benjamin Netanyahu previously requested a postponement of the hearing, explaining that due to the security situation and political circumstances in the country, he is unable to appear before the court in the upcoming period.
He is the first sitting Israeli prime minister to be charged with crimes including bribery, fraud and abuse of office, charges he denies.
The trial began in 2020 and although he could face a prison sentence in case of a guilty verdict, the proceedings are continuously postponed due to his prime ministerial duties and current political events.
Parliamentary elections are also expected in Israel this year, and according to previous polls, there is a possibility of a change in the balance of political forces after the elections.
